The University hires only U.S. citizens and aliens lawfully authorized to work in the United States. The University maintains a full time staff of police officers, uniformed crime investigators and administrative personnel. University Police are armed, uniformed, and sworn police officers who are certified under the laws of the State of Nevada. They perform the same law enforcement activities as those of municipal, county, and state law enforcement agencies. They enforce all federal, state, local laws and ordinances within the jurisdiction of the University of Nevada, Reno.
The University Police Department maintains interlocal agreements with the Reno Police Department, Sparks Police Department, Washoe County Sheriff's Office, and the State of Nevada Highway Patrol. This allows University Police officers to exercise their powers of authority off campus and at the University approved fraternities, sororities, and adjacent properties.

The University Police Department offers many hiring incentives including a full benefits package and paid credits toward a college degree. UNPD officers may also be assigned to one of the following programs:
