Description of Club
What: The Informal Philosophy Club is a convocation of kids
posing as intellectuals, kids who use words like "convocation" instead of
"group". Occasionally, there will be guest appearances by actual
intellectuals. We discuss topics that would charitably be described as
"unpopular in
the classroom". Meetings are open to everyone, regardless of
political affiliation or economic standing.

Topic: Can we be united?
We seek to be united with others our whole lives. Politicians
promise to unite us. Good relations, we are told, involve unity. But
what kind of unity can really be achieved? And why do we want so badly
to be united with others? We understand that agreeing to one set of laws
unites us in some way with others. But can we unite with others in some
other, perhaps deeper, way? We know that we can be legally united with
another in marriage. But can we achieve another level of unity besides?
We will explore these questions in our next meeting.
Who: The Philosophy Department makes us use the term
"club," but there are no sign-ups, obligations or tangible benefits.
We think you still ought to show up.
