Interests include history of philosophy and Continental philosophy, with major attention to Descartes, Hobbes, Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Nietzsche, Heidegger, and Sartre. 


Hoffman is the author of several books: The Anatomy of Idealism (Kluwer/Martinus Nijhoff, 1982), The Human Self and the Life and Death Struggle (U. of Florida, 1983), Doubt, Time, and Violence (U. of Chicago, 1986), Violence in Modern Philosophy (U. of Chicago, 1989), and The Quest for Power: Hobbes, Descartes and the Emergence of Modernity (Humanities Press, 1996).  His latest book is Freedom, Equality, Power (Peter Lang, 1999).
