Guy Axtell

In 2004 received College Liberal Arts Dean's Award for Outstanding Teaching and Service by a Member of the Part-Time or Contingent Faculty.

Areas of Specialization include Epistemology and Metaphysics, Philosophy of Science, and Philosophy of Religion.  He also has strong teaching and research interests in American philosophy, including James, Dewey, and Rorty.  Educated in a program for East/West comparative philosophy and religion at the University of Hawai'i, Guy is especially interested in questions of inter-faith dialogue, and issues relating to the relationship between scientific reason and religious faith.

He is published in many major journals in epistemology and is editor of the first reader in virtue epistemology, a field of burgeoning interest.  His collection is entitled Knowledge, Belief and Character: Readings in Virtue Epistemology (Rowman and Littlefield, 2000).  Currently, he is at work on a manuscript for Pragmatism and Pluralism, which develops a theoretical defense of both philosophic and religious pluralism.
