Tom Nickles to be Joseph N. Crowley Distinguished
Professor of the Humanities for 2005-2007
Tom Nickles, Chair of the Department of Philosophy, has been
named the Joseph N. Crowley Distinguished Professor of the Humanities for
2005-2007. During the period of this appointment, Tom will teach regularly
in Core Humanities, and will develop new Capstone courses. He will also be
replaced in the Philosophy Department by a Post-Doctoral Fellow supported by the
Core Humanities Endowment, which also funds the CH Distinguished Professorships.
Tom will be presenting public humanities lectures each semester during the term
of the professorship.
Tom Nickles received B.A. and B.S. degrees from the University
of Illinois, and went on to complete a Ph.D. degree in history and philosophy of
science at Princeton University. While at Princeton, Tom was a Woodrow
Wilson Fellow, a Danforth Fellow, a National Science Foundation Fellow, and an
Osgood Fellow. He came to UNR in 1976, after teaching at the the
University of Illinois and the University of Chicago. In addition to more
than 80 articles and numerous presentations in international venues, Tom has
edited several books, among them Thomas Kuhn in the Cambridge University
Press Contemporary Philosophers in Focus series (2003). Tom has
been very active in university affairs and has served three terms as chair of
the Philosophy Department. From 1986 to 1990, Tom was a Foundation
Professor at the University of Nevada.
