Students are expected, however, to read the texts closely, think about the issues carefully, and attend class diligently; students not prepared to make this commitment are not encouraged to enroll.

Description:

This course will both explore the story of modern art and examine philosophical issues arising from art in general, which include: the nature of pictorial representation (and how pictures are possible), the ethical and cognitive implications of art, whether there is an "aesthetic emotion," the relationship of painting to other art forms, and whether art requires a theory of art for us to understand it.
