theater simple: 52 PICK UP

Thursday-Friday, Sept. 22-23, 2011 / 7:30 p.m. and Friday, Sept. 23, 2011 / 10 p.m.

Redfield Proscenium Theatre, Church Fine Arts Building

An award-winning, internationally acclaimed company, theater simple was founded with the aim of stripping the theatrical experience down to its elemental parts: the imagination of the actor and audience, the playwright's words and the director's vision.

theater simple has built a solid artistic reputation producing provocative, literate, subversive, entertaining and original theatrical experiences. We aim to do plays that touch/challenge/change, and perhaps inspire artists and audiences that want theater simple.
We build from the imagination up.

Performing and touring internationally since 1991, theater simple has participated in international arts festivals from East (Spoleto Festival USA, Piccolo Theatre series, Charleston, South Carolina) to West (Perth International Arts Festival Fringe, Western Australia), to Far East (Flipside, Singapore Arts Festival). We are even known to perform here at home in Seattle.  In over 17 years of touring and producing, theater simpletons have built six theaters in Seattle and Australia, and produced over 30 plays in four countries on three continents. We have also accumulated many awards and accolades from media and arts councils, more than one can comfortably shake a stick at…

For instance ~

In Australia, the highly competitive GRAND PRIZE for ARTISTIC EXCELLENCE at the Adelaide Fringe Festival was awarded the company in 1996 - overall honors out of 350 groups by the Advertiser and the Independent Arts Council of South Australia.  (Not bad for the Australian debut of a tiny theater from Seattle.)

Subsequently, in 1998 THE MASTER & MARGARITA was named one of three BEST PLAYS at the Adelaide Fringe, and The FOREIGN LEGION, curated by the artistic directors of the company, swept all THREE Best Play awards. With those humble Aussie beginnings, theater simple has brought 18 works across the big pond and have taught and toured schools at every Adelaide Fringe Festival since 1996.
Both at home and abroad theater simple has taken to Site-Specific performance with productions taking place throughout parks, in and around Airstream Trailers and podcast from atop a mobile park bench. Look for more Theatrical Adventures in the future.

theater simple's Unofficial ‘Rules’  our guidelines for working on any project

Unofficial Rule #1 - Borrow, steal or
recycle the shoestring...
Unofficial Rule #2 - The audience is smart...
UnRule #3 - That which doesn't kill us
makes us stronger...
Unrule #4 - Allow the audience the dignity of
their own response...
Unrule #5 - Simple does not mean easy...

I guess we're just an unruly bunch of artists.....
we take theater seriously, not ourselves.
-
We play well with others.
