Introduction

The purpose of ARI is to provide match funding for university-industry partnerships.

Program Description and Requirements

1. The ARI was established 1) to leverage industrial dollars for research and 2) to match federal/state funds where a match is mandatory. At least a 1:1 match is required; a higher match is desired.

2. All ARI funds must be used to support research and to promote the economic development and economic diversity of the State of Nevada.

3. Funds are restricted to research grants and contracts (not service or training projects).

4. Generally, project awards will be made for one year and < $50,000.

1. ARI proposals will be reviewed upon submittal, thus allowing for the development of and investment in emerging opportunities. All UNR faculty who are eligible to serve as a principal investigator on a grant or contract may apply for Applied Research Funds.

2. Proposals must be submitted to Lloyd Douglas at 327-2365.

3. A project description of not more than 10 double-spaced pages (excluding transmittal sheet, budget justification and resumes). The proposal should include a short abstract and should provide a brief but explicit description of the applied research project. The proposal must address the evaluation criteria set forth below and must include a detailed budget that specifies both the sponsor’s funds and funds from the Applied Research Initiative.

4. If the applicant anticipates the use of humans or non-human warm-blooded animals, an appropriate protocol must also be included with the proposal. For human subjects, the protocol guidelines may be found at the OHRP website or by calling 327-2368. For animal subjects, please call 784-4874.

5. Review oversight will be provided by Dr. Richard Bjur.

Criteria for Evaluating Proposals

1. Highest priority will be given to applications that propose to use the funds to stimulate new University/industry partnerships and to promote the economic development and economic diversity of the State of Nevada.

2. Proposals that foster industrial relationships with companies outside of Nevada, particularly those that could develop into long-term research relationships between the company and the University are also encouraged.

3. A project description that clearly demonstrates to the review committee long term benefit to all parties of the partnership, including project deliverables and a corresponding schedule and budget.

4. Partnerships that involve and support undergraduate and graduate student research or provide for student internships in the business.

5. Partnerships that develop UNR technology and that further the potential for commercialization.

6. Partnerships that provide for the acquisition of research equipment by UNR.

7. Cooperative effort between the Desert Research Institute, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and the University of Nevada, Reno.
