Congress' Election 2002 Web Archive

The Library of Congress’ Election 2002 Web Archive is the world’s largest fully-catalogued collection of Web sites, storing more than 1,100 daily impressions of all campaign sites of political candidates running for House, Senate and Governorships in 2002. A joint project of The Library of Congress, The Pew Charitable Trusts, and WebArchivist.org, the archive offers access to more than 3000 unique URLs, has 1.3 terabytes of data and features almost 50 million Web objects.

Kirsten Foot, professor at the University of Washington, and Steve Schneider, professor at SUNY IT, are co-directors of the project. They note that while about seven million Web pages are added each day, the average site has a lifespan of 44 to 70 days and are often irretrievable once they’re gone. This collection preserves “snapshots” of this fluid digital information environment. The archive is a valuable resource for scholars, citizens, and politicians.
