Social Security Cards

A social security card is required for students and scholars who intend to earn
money in the United States.   A social security card is not needed to open a bank account, although it is much more convenient to have a social security number to obtain services, such as utilities, credit cards, etc.

Applying for a Social Security Card

It is best to apply for a social security card immediately upon receiving a job offer since it takes
about two to three weeks to process. It is necessary to personally visit the Social
Security Administration Office in order to file the Social Security application.

Application Receipt

Upon application for a social security card, a receipt should be requested. UNR
employees must take this receipt to be attached to their employment form.
