Social Security Administration

A social security card is required for students and scholars who intend to earn
money in the United States. A social security card is not needed to open a bank account, although it is much more convenient to have a social security number to obtain services, such as utilities, credit cards, etc.

Applying for a Social Security Card

It is best to apply for a social security card immediately upon arrival since it takes
about two to three weeks to process. It may be necessary to personally visit a Social
Security Administration Office. In early September, however, a representative from
Social Security may be available at the invitation of OISS to accept applications.
Check with OISS for dates and times as this is a very convenient
service.

Application Receipt

Upon application for a social security card, a receipt should be requested. UNR
employees must take this receipt to be attached to their employment form.

Documents Required

The following documents are needed to apply for a Social Security card:

  • Passport
    • Form I-94 (small white card stapled in the passport)
    • UNR I.D. Card, driver's license, or other form of identification
  • Social Security Number letter from OISS (should be inside check-in folder)

Other documents:

  • F-1, J-1 students
    • Form I-20 or DS-2019
  • J-1 scholars
    • Form DS-2019
  • J-2 status
