Use of Western Institutional Review Board (WIRB)

The Western Institutional Review Board (WIRB) is a fully accredited, independent IRB that has provided review and oversight of industry-sponsored, industry-initiated clinical protocols for University investigators at the University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) since November 2, 2007. The WIRB serves as the IRB of record for those protocols they review on behalf of the University. Protocols previously reviewed and/or approved by the UNR Biomedical IRB may not be transferred to WIRB. The University has not contracted with any other independent IRBs.

Important: If you decide to use WIRB for review of your protocol, it is essential that you read the instructions below as well as those at the WIRB website.

Use of University of Nevada Las Vegas IRBs

In an effort to relieve the regulatory burden on investigators in the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE), an agreement was established, effective August 18, 2009, to allow investigators at UNR and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) to rely on the IRBs of one another for collaborative human subjects research projects. The “reviewing IRB” will serve as the IRB of record for the project, responsible for review and oversight. Protocols previously reviewed and/or approved by the “reviewing IRB” may not be transferred to the “relying IRB.”

Submitting to UNLV: UNR investigators, who wish to rely one of UNLV’s IRBs, must:

  1. complete the “Notice of Intent to Rely on Another IRB” form and
  2. submit the signed form with the entire proposed UNLV application to the UNR Office of Human Research Protection (UNR OHRP) for review and signature. (Allow two business days for this approval.)

Important: The “Notice of Intent” grants permission to investigators to rely on the determinations of the collaborating institution’s IRB. Once the “Notice of Intent” is approved, the UNR OHRP will notify UNLV’s IRB office that the UNR investigator(s) may submit their protocol application to UNLV.

The Renown IRB will serve as the IRB of record for the project, responsible for review and oversight.

Submitting to Renown: UNR investigators who wish to rely on the Renown IRB must complete and submit the "Notice of Intent to Rely on Another IRB" form to the UNR Office of Human Research Protection.

Important: The "Notice of Intent" grants permission to investigators to rely on the determinations of the Renown IRB.
