NNELI for K-12 Practicing Classroom Teachers

NNELI offers professional development in STEM and ESL for licensed, practicing K-12 classroom teachers. Teachers who hold a current ESL endorsement, have taught for three or more years, and teach in Title 1/STEM -designated schools or schools with at least 25% ELs are eligible to apply. (Bilingual teachers preferred.) Successful applicants will receive advanced training, including strategies for working with ELs within STEM content-based disciplines and the development of Academic Language with ELs. The compressed schedule will provide completers with 6 graduate credits over a five-week period, beginning in June, 2013.

  • Academic Language Development with EL (AL-EL) (June 25-July 26, 2013)
  • Curriculum and Development- STEM Inquiry for EL (STEM-SI) (July 8-26, 2013)

These graduate level courses, specially designed by NNELI, in collaboration with the Washoe County School District (WCSD), will focus on:

  • Inquiry Instruction
  • Core Curriculum Standards at both the National and State levels
  • Sheltered Instruction Methods
  • Academic Language in STEM with ELs, informed by Systemic Functional Linguistics

This program provides financial assistance toward courses and materials, and is open to a limited number of WCSD teachers. Teachers from other districts or private schools in Northern Nevada who meet eligibility criteria will be considered if there is space.
