urriculum

Many individuals have worked toward bringing you the best Indian curriculum available in Nevada. Nevada Indian teachers contributed their tried and true lessons about their own Tribe. VISTA volunteers gave selflessly of their time and energy to provide lessons developed and approved by Washoe Tribal elders. Nevada '96 teacher of the year, Jeff Johnston, lent his expertise to the development of a hands on science curriculum that has been field tested in three districts.

We know that school teachers are mandated to teach school children about the indigenous Tribes of Nevada. We also know that until now, there has been little curriculum available to help teachers with this task. Here then, is our best offering to help you accurately portray the three Tribes of Nevada: Washoe, Paiute, and Shoshone. It is our hope that Native American students will have an opportunity to become more knowledgeable studying Nevada Indians, enhancing self identity and building esteem. We hope that non-Native American students will gain an understanding of the historical aspects of Nevada Indians and their lifestyle today. At a time when racial tension and confrontation escalates, it is imperative that we help school children learn to appreciate diversity.

This Nevada Indian curriculum has been a labor of love for many who share the same vision. We encourage you to use our lessons to promote multicultural education across the curriculum.
