Project Willow -- Overview

Project Willow is a hands-on science curriculum that represents a radical departure from the traditional "hands-off" textbook approach to elementary science education.

This curriculum was designed to introduce fourth graders to basic environmental science concepts from the perspective of the Washoe Indians. It traces Washoe encounters with the local environment in both traditional and modern times.

The curriculum moves through the three seasons of ancient Washoe life, pausing at points along the way to explore the Washoe culture and provide students with a general picture of traditional Washoe life. The unit concludes by examining the effect of Euro-American settlement on Washoe lands. The connection of the Washoe culture with the natural environment is explored, along with how the loss of traditional lands has had a profound effect on the Washoe as a people.
