Nevada Native Plants and Animals
(Cooperative Lesson)
Activity Goals:
- Students will identify major plants and animals used by the Natives of Nevada.
- Students will identify how plants and animals were obtained, prepared and the different
uses by the Natives of Nevada.
Materials:
- Four (4) Student Information Workbooks
- Plant and Animal Identification Card Worksheets
- Nevada Map (Optional)
- Nevada Native Plants and Animals Identification Booklets
Procedures:
- Explain to the students the activity goals 1 - 2.
- Divide the students into their same tribal bands.
- Name and identify different plants and animals using a wildlife transparency or wall map
of Nevada.
- Have students decide in their groups which plants and animals they would like to work on
for this activity.
- Write the topic questions on the board/chart.
- Where in Nevada did your tribal band locate the plant or animal (N, W, E, S)?
- What type of areas did you find the plant or animal in (mountains, foothills, deserts,
etc.)?
- Did you hunt, trap, or fish for the animal?
- Did you gather, harvest or grow the plant?
- After you obtained the plant or animal, how did you prepare it for use? (Name at least 2
uses for each plant or animal.)
- Students will meet in their cooperative groups.
- Record the information on a comparison chart as each group speaker presents their
information .
- Compare and discuss the charted information.
Additional Activities of Lesson:
- Students can compare the similarities and differences of plant and animal types and
their uses.
- Students can write a paragraph using their information.
- Students can compare the present day with past Native food uses of the plants and
animals.
- Students can illustrate the sequence of obtaining, preparation and use of one of the
plants or animals.
- Students can illustrate the ecosystem food chain of one of the areas of Nevada, showing
the plants, animals and Natives of Nevada.
- Students can add to the Seasonal Timeline, the types of plants and animals gathered
seasonally
