Newton Network Newsletter – November 2007
Newton Network News: Hope everyone is into the swing of the semester and experiencing success with your all your students. While spring may seem a long way away, we thought it would be a good time to help you begin planning for the science fairs and activities coming up next year, so we have some new information for you. Also, we are asking for your help in a reader survey this month. Once again, please pass your newsletter on to your colleagues, and let them know that they can sign up for their own newsletter as easily as going to our website (www.unr.edu/newton)
In This Issue:
Regional/Statewide:
Science Fairs – get your students involved in the fun
Math Problems – check out the weekly problems
We need feedback – does your newsletter help?
Science Fair – Now that winter is close, indoor preparation for the spring science fairs is an excellent activity to maintain student interest and spark creativity. Are you or your students at a loss for new ideas? If so, then check out the Internet Public Library/Kid Space (http://www.ipl.org/div/kidspace/projectguide/...). This site is filled with everything from cool ideas to a step-by-step guide on how to conduct a science fair. Another excellent source for ideas is the PBS DragonFly TV (http://pbskids.org/dragonflytv/scifair/index.html) science fair website. If you can’t make a decision then spin the wheel and see what idea turns up.
Two state wide science fairs will be held in the spring. The Western Nevada Regional Science and Engineering Fair (WNRSEF) and the Southern Nevada Regional Science and Engineering Fair (SNRSEF) are both just around the corner. We are working on getting more information on both of these annual events. Of course, the Nevada Science Olympiad is also coming on March 1, but Dr. Richard Vineyard, the Nevada Department of Education person that facilitates it, would also like to run some regional competitions if he can get some help with them. Contact him at (rvineyard@doe.nv.gov).
Also of interest is the Northern California Western Nevada Junior Science and Humanities Symposium to be held in March 2008. The symposium is geared toward high school students and is held in Monterey Bay. Additional information is available on their website (http://www.lawrencehallofscience.org/jshs/index...).
Finally, the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) has scheduled their Science and Engineering Fair for March 29 & 30; check them out at (http://sciences.unlv.edu/engineeringfair/fair/...). At press time, the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) is still working on setting their dates so they align with local school district schedules. Contact Sam at (sadimuzio@unr.edu) for more information on this Middle School and High School programs at UNR. The UNR Chemistry Department also does a high school competition in the spring for all the northern Nevada school districts; for more information on that, contact Brian Frost at (frost@unr.edu).
Math Problems – NASA adds a twist to math by providing an unusual problem based on space science and astronomy. Each week a new problem is available at (http://image.gsfc.nasa.gov/poetry/weekly/...).
We need feedback – Newton News is a grant funded project and we are required to report on how we are doing. To accomplish this, we are asking that you let us know if you read the Newton News. We have tried to make letting us know very simple: Either 1) if you are using MS Outlook for your mail, just click I read Newton News; or 2) if you use a different mail reader, then please send an email to rnewbury@unr.edu with “I read Newton News” in the subject line. Your feedback will help us continue and support this newsletter. Thanks.
