Math Teacher Resources – This month we put some extra work into researching some math resources and have found a few excellent sources of math education opportunities and resources.
MathCounts is dedicated to promoting the enthusiasm for mathematics in middle schools through a program of math clubs and competitions. Thirty schools in the state have active math clubs as part of the MathCounts program. More information on the math club program or the math competitions go to (http://www.mathcounts.org )
Math League specializes in math contests, books and computer software targeting grade levels 4-12. Eight schools in the state currently participate in the Math League contests. More information on the contest and math teaching resources is available at (http://www.mathleague.com )
Hanlon Math focuses on professional development for math teachers through conferences, in-service instruction and school coaching. Hanlon Math also provides a variety of math teaching resources including video lessons. More information is available at (http://www.hanlonmath.com )
Let’s not forget that there are also resources available locally through the outreach programs and the school districts. All of the universities and colleges in the state provide courses and workshop supporting the continuing professional development of teachers. Rather than lists all of these programs, we would suggest contacting the college or university nearest to you. Contact information is available on our webpage (http://www.unr.edu/newton ), follow the link to connections.
One local resource we found to be outstanding is Washoe Math, an educational collaborative of Washoe County. The site provides links to a full range of math teaching resources indexed by grade level. If you are looking for a math teaching resource check out this site at (http://www.washoemath.org )
