Newton Network Newsletter – February 2008
Newton Network News:
The holidays are behind us now although the cold weather is still upon us. Now is the time to reinvigorate science exploration with indoor activities. In this issue we have information on upcoming robotics competitions and sources for robotics projects for the classroom. And don’t forget the regional science fairs coming next month.
Once again, please pass your newsletter on to your colleagues, and let them know that they can sign up for their own newsletter as easily as going to our website (www.unr.edu/newton).
In This Issue:
Regional/Statewide:
Robotics Competition – USFirst Regional Robotics Competition in Las Vegas
Math Problem of the Day – SAT Math problems
Science Fair – Reminder Regional Science and Engineering Fairs
Newton Network Website – Updates to our website
Robotics Competition - FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) will be holding their 4th Annual Regional Robotics Competition at the Thomas & Mack Center on the UNLV campus March 26-29. This competition teams high school students with engineers, professors and local businessmen to solve real life problems with robotics. At this time there are a few openings available for entries but time is running short. For full information on this competition go to (http://lvfirst.egr.ulnv.edu).
This is only one of many regional competitions. UC Davis will host a robotics competition on March 20-22 with thirty-six teams competing. For students and teachers in northern Nevada this location may be a better option for a field trip. For more information on this competition go to (http://firstsac.engineering.ucdavis.edu).
If the option of attending one of these regional robotics competitions isn’t a possibility doesn’t mean that your students cannot get involved. USFIRST has programs for all age groups. More information about USFIRST organization, their projects and getting involved is available on the web at (http://www.usfirst.org).
Math Problem of the Day – Looking for a challenge to help your students prepare for an upcoming SAT? Check out this website for a daily math challenge (http://education.yahoo.com/college/math_problem).
Science Fair – The Western Nevada Regional Science and Engineering Fair (WNRSEF) will be on March 20-22. Check out their website at (http://www.nevadasciencefair.net).
