Newton Network Newsletter – April 2008
Newton Network News:
Spring is finally here and summer will follow shortly. Now is the time to finalize your professional development activities and look for the student project that will carry across the long break. The summer months also bring clear night skies and excellent opportunities to become engaged in astronomy.
Once again, please pass your newsletter on to your colleagues, and let them know that they can sign up for their own newsletter as easily as going to our website (www.unr.edu/newton).
In This Issue:
Regional/Statewide:
NESSI – Update on the Western Nevada Regional Science and Engineering Fair
ASTRO Camp – Star explorer camps for the family
Space Day – Join the celebration
Science and Math Camps – Reminder of the upcoming summer camps
Science Projects – Science projects for the summer

NESSI – The Nevada Earth/Space Science hands-on teacher workshops are scheduled for June 9th – 20th with both classroom instruction and field based learning. This program is targeted for 6th grade science teachers but is open to all science teachers in the 4th through 9th grades. Applications are currently being accepted and seating is limited. The latest information on NESSI can be found at Dr. Crowthers’s website (http://wolfweb.unr.edu/homepage/crowther )
ASTRO Camp – Space Science for Schools will be hosting a series of family oriented evening Star Parties and overnight Star Explorer Camps beginning in June and continuing until October near Lake Tahoe. Information for these events can be found at (http://www.ss4s.org/familyastroevents.htm)
Space Day – Space day will celebrate 50 years of NASA history on May 2nd. This is a great opportunity for your students to get involved. Get all the information on this event and resources you can use in your class at (http://www.spaceday.org)
Science and Math Camps – Just a quick reminder of the camps that will be held this summer:
Science Projects – The skies will light up with many annual stellar events during the summer. The Perseid Meteor Shower in August is always a delight. Although not observable in this area, there will be a total solar eclipse and a partial lunar eclipse this summer.
Information on these events and many more is available at any of the three planetariums in Nevada: The Fleischmann Planetarium on the UNR campus (http://planetarium.unr.nevada.edu), The Planetarium on the CSN campus (http://www.csn.edu/planetarium) and the Jack C. Davis Observatory on the WNC campus (http://www.wnc.edu/observatory). For those in eastern Nevada, your closest source is Ott Planetarium at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah (http://community.weber.edu/planetarium)
Perhaps you would prefer a more hands-on, do-it-yourself approach to stargazing. The NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory’s Night Sky Network provides all the information you will need to begin your own galactic search with planning calendars for events, charts of the skies, resources for the observer and links to many Night Sky Network clubs in both Reno/Carson City and Las Vegas. Visit their website at (http://nightsky.jpl.nasa.gov)
Professional Development – Now is the time to plan and register for that summer class or activity as part of your continuing professional development. Continuing education classes are available through all of the colleges and universities. Contact information for all of the colleges and universities is provided on our website (http://www.unr.edu/newton/connections.html). We wanted to provide you with a few alternatives as you begin planning your summer activities.
PBS Teacherline provides a variety of professional development opportunities through the PBS radio stations in KNPB Reno (http://www.knpb.org) and KLVX Las Vegas (http://www.klvx.org). The lineup for the summer has been expanded considerably since last year. If you don’t find exactly what you are looking for then checkout the PBS national Teacherline at (http://www.pbs.org/teacherline).
Annenberg Media’s Learner.org is also a great resource for continuing education and offers many online courses in science and math as well as other fields. Check out what is offered at (http://www.learner.org).
E-Teachers is also an option that you may wish to consider. This site serves as a source for many online resources including degree programs, development resources and educational opportunities. Check out the website at (http://www.e-teachers.com)
Outreach Events – Mark your calendars for this event. April 7th at the Silver Legacy in Reno. Outreach for K-12 with keynote speaker, Dr. Uri Treisman, University of Texas. The event will highlight the K-12 outreach programs at UNR, TMCC, and WCSD. For more information (http://www.unr.edu/newton/newsletters/outreach-flyer.doc)
