Newton Network Newsletter – May 2007

Newton Network News:

Howdy once again.

We can almost see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Our AP teachers are getting their students warmed up for the big day(s), and the rest of us are getting our students ready for finals and summertime freedom (preferably in that order).

We all need to finalize our plans for the summer, and if that includes some coursework, we have added some references for you in this issue.

Thanks to everyone for passing along your Newton Network Newsletter to your colleagues.

Also, feel free to let them know that they can sign up on the website to get their own newsletter if they are interested.

Small Modification:

Up to this point, we have been sending separate newsletters to areas where certain activities were occurring.

However, since some activities affect more than one area, we are now going to show you the whole enchilada.

However, we will still show the “focus” regions so you know generally where the things are happening.

This will allow you to make your own choices if you see things you like in other regions.

In This Issue:

Northern Nevada (NN):

Science Equipment – available for outreach activities

Regional/Statewide:

Independent Learning –independent courses for teachers and students

Summer Classes – Get those upgrade/Certificate credits

Silver State AP Summer Institute – Beef up your AP teaching

Gotta Question? – Newton Network can work two ways

Science Equipment (NN) – The University of Nevada School of Medicine (UNSOM) has some science equipment that they will loan out to faculty, students, and teachers for outreach kinds of activities.

The supplies are used for a variety of activities including summer outreach programs, so they may be of use to you.

Their web site also provides ideas, lesson plans, and other support.

See (http://www.unr.edu/med/dept/k_12/counselors...).

Independent Learning – While there are other summer courses available (and mentioned below), UNR has a special group of both high school and university courses that can be taken with different delivery methods.

This is your opportunity to do some work on your own.

Check it out at: (http://extendedstudies.unr.edu/ilearn.htm).

Summer Classes – Remember that you can always sign up for summertime courses to expand your horizons, support your career activities, meet certification requirements, and sometimes just to have some fun with some other folks.

Go to (http://edoutreach.unlv.edu) to check out UNLV’s extended studies, and (http://www.unr.edu/content/outreach/coop...) for UNR’s extended studies.

And, if you have a community college nearby, they always have some interesting courses available.

Check out your choices under the “Quick Links” at (http://system.nevada.edu).

Silver State AP Conference – Do you teach an Advanced Placement™ course?

Would you like to get the newest updates and information?

The Silver State AP Conference (http://www.silverstateap.net/index.html) provides training on more than 30 of the AP courses.

One of the organizers reported that it was a huge success last year due to the large response from teachers.

It’s in Las Vegas from June 25-28, so if you can get to the conference, it will be worth it.

Gotta Question?

As we continue to grow our database and contacts, we want everyone to know that you can ask a question at any time.

We will find the answer, or we will find someone who has it.

What do you use to teach basic chemical reactions if you don’t have a lab?

How do you manage critters in your classroom?

How can you teach quantum physics with jump ropes?

No question goes unanswered.

Try out the system.
