Newton Network Newsletter – June 2007

Newton Network News:

Here is the last newsletter for the 2006-07 school year.

The next normal newsletter will come out at the first of September, although if something comes up that might be of help, we will get it to you in a special edition.

Thanks to everyone for passing along your Newton Network Newsletter to your colleagues this year – we appreciate your support.

Also, remember that any one can sign up on the website to get their own newsletter if they are interested.

In This Issue:

Regional/Statewide:

Applied GPS – use your GPS to calculate Earth’s circumference

Independent Learning – independent courses for teachers and students

Summer Classes – Get those upgrade/Certificate credits

Silver State AP Summer Institute – Beef up your AP teaching

Gotta Question? – Newton Network can work two ways

Applied GPS – Do you have a good GPS unit that you can use in your classroom?

A company called ESRI has a project that allows you to calculate the Earth’s circumference using the GPS device.

The lesson incorporates some history, some astronomy, physics, math, and lots more.

Check it out at (http://gis2.esri.com/industries/education/arc...).

You need to click on the clipboard on the left to download the materials.

There is another contribution toward this kind of project at (http://www.astrosociety.org/education/publication...) as well.

Independent Learning – While there are other summer courses available (and mentioned below), UNR has a special group of both high school and university courses that can be taken with different delivery methods.

This is your opportunity to do some work on your own.

Check it out at: (http://extendedstudies.unr.edu/ilearn.htm).

Summer Classes – Remember that you can always sign up for summertime courses to expand your horizons, support your career activities, meet certification requirements, and sometimes just to have some fun with some other folks.

Go to (http://edoutreach.unlv.edu) to check out UNLV’s extended studies, and (http://www.unr.edu/content/outreach/coop...) for UNR’s extended studies.

And, if you have a community college nearby, they always have some interesting courses available.

Check out your choices under the “Quick Links” at (http://system.nevada.edu).

Silver State AP Conference – Do you teach an Advanced Placement™ course?

Would you like to get the newest updates and information?

The Silver State AP Conference (http://www.silverstateap.net/index.html) provides training on more than 30 of the AP courses.

One of the organizers reported that it was a huge success last year due to the large response from teachers.

It’s in Las Vegas from June 25-28, so if you can get to the conference, it will be worth it.

Gotta Question?

As we continue to grow our database and contacts, we want everyone to know that you can ask a question at any time.

We will find the answer, or we will find someone who has it.

What do you use to teach basic chemical reactions if you don’t have a lab?

How do you manage critters in your classroom?

How can you teach quantum physics with jump ropes?

No question goes unanswered.

Try out the system.
