Newton Network Special Newsletter – February 2007

Newton Network News:  Not long after I sent out this month’s newsletter, I got some late, breaking news, so I need to get this out to everyone as quickly as I can.  You will have an opportunity to watch Engineering history being made on February 15th.  Check it out below.

In This Issue:
4-Span Bridge Test – live web cast of a very large artificial earthquake process
Summer Adventures – register soon for outdoor learning courses

Gotta Question? – Newton Network can work two ways

4-Span Bridge Test  The James E. Rogers and Louis Weiner, Jr Large Scale Structures Laboratory at UNR is preparing to conduct an earthquake test on a 4-span 110-foot bridge.  This lab is one of the few in the world capable of implementing this kind of test with their shake table system.  The best part is that they will be conducting the test on a web cast.  You will be able to show this to your students as it is happening.  For further information, go to (nees.unr.edu/4-spanbridges/), and from the upper right corner of the page you can link to the test itself.  The test is scheduled for Thursday, February 15th at 10:00 a.m.  The date might be moved, depending on the other testing schedules, but you can check for changes on the web site.

Summer Adventures  Just a reminder that the registration for NERDS (Nevada Educators Really Doing Science) conducting ecology field experiences in Oregon and Feather River, and TEAC (The Earth as A Classroom) conducting plate tectonics field experiences all around western Nevada and eastern California, closes March 15th.  This are incredible opportunities to learn and conduct real science with leading experts in the actual field conditions.

Gotta Question?  As we continue to grow our database and contacts, we want everyone to know that you can ask a question at any time.  We will find the answer, or we will find someone who has it.  What do you use to teach basic chemical reactions if you don’t have a lab?  How do you manage critters in your classroom?  How can you teach quantum physics with jump ropes?  No question goes unanswered.  Try out the system.
