Now in its fifth year, the Cultural Considerations in Health Care event will be held Feb. 23 and 24 in the Joe Crowley Student Union at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Sponsored by the Division of Health Sciences and High Sierra Area Health Education Center, this interdisciplinary event, created by students for students, provides those studying the health sciences an educational experience in cultural awareness and its application to health research, policy and practice.

The two-day event carries the title "Upstream Nevada: Building a Culture of Health."

Cultural Considerations in Health Care attendees are invited to attend one or all of a series of presentations and workshops.

Workshops, often discussed in an interactive manner, include a variety of topics such as promoting health care to diverse audiences, caring for transgender and gender non-conforming persons, navigating racial and ethnic inclusion and exclusion, intervention techniques for tobacco dependence, aging sensitivity simulation, mobilizing for policy change in public health, health literacy, identifying sex trafficking victims in health care, the HPV vaccine and health care reform for Nevadans.

A keynote address, entitled "Moving Healthcare Up: Addressing and Improving Social Determinants of Health and Clinical Care" will be presented by Rishi Manchanda, M.D., MPH, founder and president of HealthBegins, a social enterprise that provides training, clinic redesign and technology to transform health care and the social determinants of health. The keynote address takes place Feb. 23 from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
