University bikers encouraged to practice safe biking during Bike Week May 9-15 and to #LookUpNV

May is National Bike Month and the Truckee Meadows Bicycle Alliance has been working hard to expand its outreach and gain new members to join Bike Week, their annual week-long bicycle awareness campaign.

John Sagebiel, assistant director for the University of Nevada, Reno's Environmental Health and Safety Program, is an avid cyclist who competes in ultra-endurance mountain bike races and often rides his human-electric hybrid bike to work.

"With such a great turnout participating in the week-long event last year, we hope more students and community members will be encouraged to bike when able," Sagebiel said. "It is such a healthy form of transportation, not only for the rider, but the environment as well."

The Bike to Work campaign is focused on promoting healthy living and physical fitness through active transportation while simultaneously working to reduce the amount of traffic on roads and pollution produced.

A University commuter challenge team has been organized for people to join the effort. Participants are encouraged to celebrate an active and sustainable transportation lifestyle by cycling to school, work and other activities May 9-15.

Coinciding with National Bike Month, there is effort led by the Nevada Department of Transportation and the Reno Transportation Commission in creating a campaign intended to increase pedestrian safety. People traveling by foot or bike are being reminded to #LookUpNV. For more information about their campaign, go to http://aroundthearch.com/blog/2015/04/30/lookupnvcampaign/.
