University launches ‘I STAND’ campaign

Students and faculty take a stand against sexual assault

The University of Nevada, Reno launched a new campus-wide initiative encouraging students to stand for consent Monday, Oct. 20, 2014. I STAND emphasizes the importance of having open and honest discussions about what ‘respectful and healthy sexual conduct’ means. The launch of this campaign included guest speakers who addressed important topics relating to sexual assault. Topics included the importance of improved sexual education and communication. Another key message was around consent, most importantly knowing when it’s expressly given. U.S. Senator Dean Heller was one of the guest speakers who spoke to the students and faculty about the importance of reporting sexual assault and the ‘Campus Accountability and Safety Act’ that he and other senators are working on to improve campus safety.

“I want applaud all of your hard work, for launching I STAND to encourage students and faculty to take action against sexual assault,” U.S. Senator, Dean Heller said, “These are serious problems that college students are facing today and I want to raise awareness and discuss how we can work together to address these issues.”
