Undergraduate Research Symposium set for April 16

Impressive research breadth of more than 60 projects will be on display in JCSU

A record number of research projects produced by undergraduate students from the University, UNLV and Sierra Nevada College will be on display during the 2013 Nevada Undergraduate Research Symposium on Tuesday, April 16, at the Joe Crowley Student Union.

"This is our most ever," Mike Collopy, assistant vice president for research at the University, and one of the program's coordinators, said of the more than 60 undergraduate research projects that will be featured. "The breadth of the projects is very impressive."

Projects on display run the gamut from cancer cell research to climate change to international business management strategies to smooth muscle relaxation to LGBT issues to grazing impacts in the West.

The event's keynote speaker will be University Executive Vice President and Provost Kevin Carman. Participating programs include the Experimental Program for the Stimulation of Competitive Research (NSF EPSCoR), a statewide interdisciplinary program among Nevada System of Higher Education institutions; General Undergraduate Research Award (GURA), a popular program administered by the Office of Undergraduate and Interdisciplinary Research; Honors Undergraduate Research Award (HURA), which is administered by the Office of Undergraduate and Interdisciplinary Research and is open to all senior Honors students.

Program sponsors are the Office Undergraduate and Interdisciplinary Research and the University.

Student sign-in and mounting of posters will be from noon to 1 p.m. in the Joe Crowley Student Union Ballrooms B/C. Welcome and introductions, including Carman's remarks, will begin at 1 p.m. and run to 2 p.m. The poster session, during which students will be present to discuss posters and answer questions, will be held from 2:30-4:30 p.m.
