University collaborates with Artown during the month of July

Five festival events hosted on campus

Artown is just around the corner and the University of Nevada, Reno is once again proud to be collaborating with the annual City of Reno summer arts festival throughout the month of July.

One of the University showstoppers is an exhibit with 80 pieces of imaginative and entertaining artworks depicting the world of gambling and casinos. The exhibit will be on display throughout the Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center as a tribute to Nevada's longtime gaming industry.

In addition to the unique art exhibit, there will be four performing arts events on the University campus including a vocal ensemble, youth percussive arts group, instrumental performance of Disney songs and a ballet show.

Starting July 1, the five University Artown events include:

S.T.A.R.S. Vocal Ensemble 

When: Saturday, July 6, 7-9 p.m.
Where: Church Fine Arts, Nightingale Concert Hall
What: S.T.A.R.S. (Singers Taking Action Reaching Souls) is an international vocal ensemble that has come together with the sole purpose of uplifting the planet with song. They will be singing everything from Motown to Gershwin.

The Art of Gaming+ Opening Reception

When: Sunday, July 7, 3-5 p.m.
Where: Mathewson-IGT Knowledge Center
What: The art exhibit was created by the Special Collections Department at the University Libraries and centers around whimsical sculptures commissioned by the Stremmel Gallery for Harrah's in 1995. It also features the artistry of slot machines, casino advertising art, showgirls, neon signs, historical photos and more.

The opening reception will allow visitors to experience a visual and anecdotal history of gaming in Nevada with people on each floor to discuss the art, receive a free 56-page commemorative booklet and have the opportunity to meet some of the artists.

The art will be on display from July 1 - September 15, 2013.

Get in the Mix; Drums, Dance and Flags

When: Saturday, July 13, 11:30 a.m.-12:45 p.m.
Where: Peccole Park
What: eNVision, a youth percussive arts group, will display the talents of musicians and dancers from all over northern Nevada. This performance will show off drumline, dance and flag routines, and continue with a performance group that combines traditional instruments with everyday objects to create a very unique performance.

Disney Magic

When: Wednesday, July 17, 6-8 p.m.
Where: University of Nevada, Reno Quad
What: The Reno Municipal Band presents popular music from Disney movies. Ross Mitchell from KOH Radio will emcee.

Admission: Free

Coppelia

When: Saturday, July 27, 7:30-9:30 p.m.
Where: Church Fine Arts Nightingale Concert Hall
What: The Sierra Nevada Ballet will perform Coppelia, a comic love story ballet tracing the relationship of two lovers through mishaps and joys.

Admission: $25
