University of Nevada, Reno baseball coach Gary Powers has seen players and presidents of the United States come and go during his 30-year tenure.

When Powers coached his first game at Nevada on, Ronald Reagan was still in his first term as president. The players who participated in that first game are now in their late 40s and early 50s. Many of them have college-age children themselves.

Powers, however, has stayed put, notching season after season as the baseball program's and the University's longest-serving coach. His participation in the Wolf Pack baseball program reaches back even further than that - he was a standout pitcher for the Pack in 1970 and '71.

His longevity reached one of its most notable moments on Tuesday, April 17, at Peccole Park. With a 10-5 victory over San Francisco, Powers has now won 900 games at the University.

Afterward, in typical understated Powers style - a style that readily admits that he has no real recollection of that first career victory 30 years ago - the veteran coach praised his players and teams, past and present, for the milestone.

"Other people made a bigger deal out of it than I did," he told the Reno Gazette-Journal's Chris Murray. "I'm just fortunate enough to have this opportunity that I've had. I've had a whole lot of great kids play for me and 30 great teams that have accomplished this.

"It hasn't been my accomplishment."

With four NCAA Tournament appearances under his belt already, Powers didn't dwell too long on the importance of Tuesday's victory. He told Murray that his focus, as it always is, was on winning a conference championship.
