The University's DeLaMare Science and Engineering Library will play host to the "Hack4Reno" event this weekend.
Hack4Reno, which will be held Dec. 1-2, is billed as "the world's biggest little hackathon." The 24-hour event commences on Dec. 1 at noon and is an opportunity for teams to build apps that somehow benefit the local community. Programmers from throughout the community will "hack" as they build on the wealth of civic data the city has available. This means creating apps for the web and other platforms that aggregate, collect, or share information about the area. The sponsoring organization of the event, Reno Collective, in partnership with the City of Reno, advises participants to have fun with the concept - the apps don't have to be boring or serious: "Maybe someone really wants to know where the closest food truck is."
The University's DeLaMare library is located in the Mackay Mines Building at the north end of the Quad. Library faculty and staff will be present/participating throughout. Food and coffee will be provided and guest wireless access will be provided by the University Information Technology.
