The University of Nevada, Reno has been named to a list of the world’s top 500 universities. The 2011 Academic Ranking of World Universities includes institutions from 40 countries.
“This ranking emphasizes faculty quality and research output, and therefore makes an important statement about the commitment and momentum of this University,” said University President Marc Johnson. “Joining this worldwide list reflects the high-caliber teaching and research happening here, and the commitment of our faculty to prepare students to compete in the globalized, knowledge-based economy.”
The annual ranking is produced by the Center for World-Class Universities at China’s Shanghai Jiao Tong University. The center describes its ranking methodology as based on a set of objective indicators and third-party data. Indicators include the number of highly cited researchers, research output demonstrated primarily through published work and the institution’s per-capita academic performance.
U.S. universities at the top of the 2011 list include Harvard, Stanford, MIT and Berkeley. In characterizing the 2011 Academic Ranking, the center noted the progress of universities in the Middle East and in China.
