Homecoming 2011 game: 'Whiteout' on horizon

The Nevada Wolf Pack hopes that Mackay Stadium will go all white for Saturday's Homecoming game against New Mexico.

Saturday's game vs. New Mexico will mark the 91st Homecoming game at the University of Nevada, and the weekend will include a number of traditions and family-friendly events. The game will kick off at 1:05 p.m. at Mackay Stadium, and Wolf Pack fans are encouraged to wear white as part of the day's promotions.

On Friday, the Nevada Alumni Association and the ASUN Department of Traditions will host a family pep rally and bonfire in the parking lot behind Peccole Park, just off of Evans Avenue. The event starts at 6 p.m. with free carnival games, free food from Men Wielding Fire, face painters, bounces and photo booths, while the bonfire lighting and fireworks show will start at 8 p.m.

Due to the bonfire, Wolf Pack fans will not be allowed to park RVs in that free tailgating lot until 11 p.m. on Friday night following the conclusion and clean-up of the bonfire.

The alumni association will also host a Homecoming concert featuring the Mudsharks at 9 p.m. at the Little Waldorf on Friday night. The event, which is co-sponsored by Battle Born Beer, the Little Waldorf and the Young Alumni Chapter, features M.C. Pickle and the Juice as the opening band.

Fans are reminded that if they park on campus for this event, they need to have their cars out of the campus parking lots by midnight to avoid being towed.

Saturday will start off with the annual Homecoming parade at 9 a.m. along Virginia Street between 9th and 15th Streets. Virginia Street will be closed along the parade route starting at 7:45 a.m. and will reopen at 10 a.m. following the conclusion of the parade.

Wolf Pack fans should plan to use alternate routes to avoid the Virginia Street closure during the parade. There may also be brief closures of 15th Street to fans looking to access the tailgating lot south of Lawlor Events Center as the parade ends.

Tickets are still available for Saturday's Homecoming game vs. the New Mexico Lobos by visiting the Lawlor Events Center Ticket Office, calling (775) 348-PACK (7225) or going online at My Nevada Tickets.
