Susan Palwick, associate professor of English, has been nominated for a Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature for the novel "The Necessary Beggar," published in 2006. Award winners will be announced during Mythcon XXXVIII, August 3 through 6, in Berkeley, Calif.
The Mythopoeic Fantasy Award for Adult Literature is given to the fantasy novel, multi-volume, or single-author story collection for adults published during 2006 that best exemplifies the spirit of the Inklings. According to Publisher's Weekly, Palwick's long-awaited second novel (after 1992's Flying in Place) succeeds as a heart-wrenching romance, a sharp meditation on refugees and displaced persons and a tragicomedy of cultural differences.
A complete list of Mythopoeic Award winners is available on the Society web site: "http://www.mythsoc.org/awards.html". The finalists for the literature awards, text of recent acceptance speeches, and selected book reviews are also listed in this on-line section.
