Nevada baseball overpowers New Mexico State to win series

Las Cruces, N.M. -  The University of Nevada Wolf Pack (18-15, 3-3 WAC) baseball team pulled away from the New Mexico State Aggies (14-18, 4-5 WAC) with a seven-run eighth inning to win 15-11 at Presley Askew Field  April 1 to take the weekend series and improve to 3-3 in WAC play.

Senior Baker Krukow led the offensive attack with a grand slam and finished the game 3-for-5 with three runs scored and four runs batted in.  Nevada's offense tallied 15 runs on 15 hits and nine walks off eight different Aggie pitchers.

The Wolf Pack got out to a hot start to lead off the game with three consecutive walks followed by a two run single by junior clean-up hitter Terry Walsh. The Pack then carried a 7-1 lead to the bottom of the seventh before New Mexico State scored five runs to pull within one run at 7-6.

Nevada answered with seven runs in the eighth inning off Krukow's grand slam and a two-run double by junior Nick Sansone. The Pack added one in the ninth inning to secure the lead even though New Mexico State scored 10 of its 11 runs in the last three innings.

Junior starting pitcher Mario Rivera(4-0) struck out six and allowed only one unearned run in five strong innings to pick up his fourth win of the season.  Already second on the Pack with two saves, he also ties senior pitcher Ryan Rodriguez for the team lead in wins with four.

Seniors Konrad Schmidt(3-for-6, 2RBI), Chris Siewert(2-for-6, 2RBI) and juniors Dan Eastham(2-for-6, 2RBI), Nick Sansone(1-for-4, 2R, 2RBI) and Terry Walsh(2-for-4, 2R, 2RBI) each contributed with 2RBI.

The Pack now has eight straight games at Peccole Park starting on Tuesday with a matchup against Pacific at 5 p.m.  Nevada will then play host to Fresno State (6 p.m., 6 p.m., 1 p.m.) for a three-game series starting April 5 at 6 p.m.
