The Associated Students of the University of Nevada (ASUN) host the second annual Conference on Civic Engagement and Service-Learning with keynote address by Ronan Farrow: Unlocking the Revolution in Each of Us: How to Mobilize Change in Your Community. Farrow is a 25-year-old writer, human rights lawyer and former aide to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He was named one of Forbes "30 under 30" most influential people, he recently signed a book deal and just announced he will be hosting a new show on MSNBC in 2014.
Students and faculty are provided lunch then transportation to one of two site-based service projects to address community needs in partnership with Project Solution, the Reno City Council and the Boys and Girls Club of Truckee Meadows. Projects include graffiti abatement and facilities maintenance. Participants will later engage in reflection groups.
The Civic Engagement and Service-Learning Conference aims to foster a culture of service within the University of Nevada, Reno student body, while connecting students with the resources necessary to become engaged and informed citizens. A committee of student leaders and faculty is planning the event. Organizers have also received valuable support from several campus partners including: the Office of Service-Learning & Civic Engagement, the Honors Program, the Northern Nevada International Center and the College of Liberal Arts' Political Science Department.
