Research Interests

  • Nuclear fuels;
  • Materials for nuclear and space applications;
  • Water chemistry;
  • Advanced nuclear power systems.

Awards and Achievements

  • Published over forty technical papers on advanced nuclear power systems, materials technology and coolant technology.
  • Granted fourteen U.S. and foreign patents including patent for Zr barrier fuel cladding. This innovative product is used in BWR's worldwide, resulting in improved fuel reliability and performance and generating several hundred million dollars in sales.
  • Received American Nuclear Society Literary Awards in 1979 and 1982.
  • Received GE's highest award for engineering and technology - the Steinmetz Award in 1983.
  • Received the Industrial Research 100 Award in 1983 for the invention and commercialization of Zr barrier fuel.
  • Elected a Fellow of the American Nuclear Society in 1990.
  • Received the Hispanic Alliance for Career Enhancement National Achievement Award in 1992.
  • Served as a senior advisor to TVA's Browns Ferry Nuclear Safety Review Board.
  • Served as a senior advisor to the University of Chicago's Review Committee for the Argonne National Laboratory Reactor Analysis and Safety Division.
