Admission Information for Graduate Students

The steps for admission into the University of Nevada, Reno are given at the admissions web site. This web site has information for admission of freshmen, transfer, and graduate students. Students must have a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university to gain admission to the department. For full graduate standing, they must complete at least 30 credits of undergraduate work in materials science or a related field. In addition, students must meet at least one of the following requirements:

  • hold a cumulative grade-point average of 2.75 for four years of undergraduate work;
  • hold a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 for the last two years of undergraduate work;
  • earn acceptable scores on the verbal and quantitative portions of the Graduate Record Examination, and submit letters of recommendation from former instructors indicating their capacity for advanced course work and research.

The department offers several graduate fellowships, research assistantships and teaching assistantships. For consideration to these types of support, admission should be submitted prior to March 15. However, all applications will be considered regardless of the date they are submitted.

International applicants must submit degree certification indicating equivalency to a U.S. bachelor's or master's degree. In addition, international applicants must report to the Office of International Students and Scholars with current visa documents upon arrival to the university. Students must also report to the Intensive English Language Center for an English placement test before registering.
