WASTE SOURCE CONTROL AND TREATMENTIntroduction:
Waste is any garbage, refuse, sludge from a waste treatment plant, water supply treatment plant, or air pollution control facility and other discarded material, including solid, liquid, semisolid, or contained gaseous materials resulting from industrial, commercial, mining, and agricultural activities and from community activities (www.afcee.brooks.af.mil/eq/modelshop/glossary).
Contaminated wastes can be treated in many different ways. They can be commonly categorized in to two. They are
In-situ treatment
Ex-situ treatmentIn-situ treatments involve treating the contaminated wastes in-place and do not transport them. In this way the toxicity of the contaminant is reduced. Since there is no transportation it reduces exposure of workers to the contaminants.
Ex-situ treatments are done by removing the material from its original location and treating them. Commonly applied methods of treatment are fixation, soil washing, acid extraction, alkaline leaching and reprocessing. Ex-situ treatments are not always advisable if the cost factor is taken in to account.
