The Undergraduate Program

The Department of Mining Engineering at University of Nevada, offers a Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering. The program includes courses in mine design, mining technology, computer applications applied to the design, management, and control of mine operations, environmental impact and mitigation of mining, industrial safety and health, and mineral economics. The curriculum is arranged to provide students with a broad background for a career as a modern mining engineer.

The Mining Engineering Degree Program
The mining engineering degree program is fully accredited and offers a variety of rigorous, and interesting courses. UNR offers an honors program, and mining students are encouraged to enroll. Because of the relatively small number of students in the program, mining engineering classes are small, which enables students to get a lot of assistance, if needed, from the professor teaching the course. It also makes for a friendly department where everyone is known and students get a sense of belonging.

The program starts off with basic courses such as calculus, English, computer skills, chemistry, geology, introductory mining and physics. The student progresses to fundamental engineering and UNR core curriculum courses. The final two years involve primarily mining classes with a lot of opportunity to use a computer to help students complete open-ended design problems. Practical laboratory experiences are part of many mining courses. Field trips are organized so that students can visit mines and see theory turned into practice.

The degree program ends with a capstone course, the complete design of a mine from start to finish, including financial, social, and environmental concerns. Students present their design to a panel of engineers and managers from the mining industry.

Some cooperative work study programs are arranged for this purpose. Opportunities exist to study and work abroad. The Fundamentals of engineering examination,administered by a State Board of Engineering Registration, must be taken by all mining engineering students during the senior Year of study.

Graduates are prepared for industrial employment or further advanced study.The department maintains a close liaison with the Mining industry and appropriate state and federal agencies.

Field Excursions for students are arranged during the academic year, and they are required to work in the minerals industry during atleast one summer vacation.

Advisement
Students will be assigned a faculty adviser upon entering the program by the department chairman. Changes in faculty Adviser can be made at the request of either the student or the Faculty member at any time. Advisement is required of all Students prior to the start of each semester. It is the student's responsibility to discuss and adhere to the course of Study agreed upon with the adviser.
