This year a group of eight mining engineering students visited the Rosebud Gold Mine near Winnemucca, Nevada, jointly owned by Hecla and Newmont, to carry out a ventilation survey of the mine. This is a required part of the class and enables the students to obtain hands on experience of what problems and difficulties can be encountered when trying to do a ventilation survey in an operating underground mine.
The visit was kindly organized by Mr. Matt Blattman, a mine engineer at the mine, and a recent graduate from the Mackay School of Mines with the approval and assistance of Mr. Richard Appling, chief mine engineer.
It involved a long day of travel and work for the group starting at 6:00am and returning at 10:00pm tired but satisfied after a successful survey. Like all field projects the group will have to analyze the data they collected while at the mine, and write a report which will be submitted to the class instructur, Professor Pierre Mousset-Jones, and Mr. Matt Blattman. In this way both the students and the mine benefit from the experience.
