456,656 MINING AND SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

This course will provide an introduction to the principles of sustainable development and explore how they can be used by the mining industry towards the development of future operations and more successful present operations. A key ingredient of sustainable development is multi-stakeholder involvement and transparency. This course will develop an understanding of how these and other issues impact the design, operation and closure of large mining projects.

Topics Include

  • Defination of sustainable development and its application to mining
  • Elements and indicators of sustainable development: environment, economics, society and governance
  • Mine permitting and environmental management (NEPA, Environmental Management Systems, Closure Plans, Financial Assurance)
  • Design, operation and closure of mine waste facilities
  • Physical and chemical stability and land use
  • Stakeholder processes
  • U.S. and international developments in sustainable development in mining
