University of Nevada

Contributing to Burrus Mining Laboratory

We appreciate very much your considering a donation to our Burrus Mining Laboratory project. We would be grateful for anything you can provide. Every $50 pays the rental for a University pick up to haul student volunteers and supplies to the site for one work shift.

We hope to raise a total of $29,000 for 1998 ($4,000 of State funds and $25,000 of donations). In the Fall of 1997 we were forced to temporarily curtail volunteer work at the site; we were $2000 in debt and felt that trying to work without sufficient funds would compromise safety. We have set a goal of $17,000 before we reinstate volunteer work. At this point, 12/31/97 we have raised about $5,100 toward that goal, about $1,500 of which are State funds.

Major Contributors: The following table lists our major contributors ($200 or more) for 1995, 1996 and 1997. There have also been a number of individuals who have contributed less than $200.

How many people will benefit? In 1995 nine UNR students used the facility for hands-on class related work and five students volunteered a total of 190 hours of saturday work. In 1996 there were 14 students who used the Laboratory for class work and 12 students who put in a total of 204 hours of volunteer weekend work. In 1997 a total of 16 students used the facility for class work and 11 students provided 320 hours of volunteer labor. In addition summer workshops introducing grammar and high school teachers to the minerals industry visited the site for mineral collecting. In a few years we hope to have progressed to where we can begin to bring grammar school and high school students to the site for tours and mineral collecting.

What funds will be used for: The funds will be used to transport student volunteers and equipment to and from the site, for the purchase of operating supplies we can not get donated (e.g. diesel fuel, gasoline, lube oil, filters, fencing, etc.), for safety equipment and tools, for equipment rental and so forth.

If you would like further information please email daemen@mines.unr.edu and mousset@mines.unr.edu and cheryl@unr.edu. Contributions should be sent to the department with the check made out to UNR FOUNDATION / BURRUS MINELAB. Thank you for your consideration.
