  • SME/AIME Overseas Travel Award
    The SME, San Fransisco Section, has awarded it’s 1997 Overseas Travel Award to John Baker, a junior in Mining Engineering, Mackay School of Mines, University of Nevada, Reno. The award provides roundtrip fare to any mining operation in the world where the section or the student is able to secure work for the summer. Mr. Baker will be working for the Newmont Gold Mining Company, Denver, Colorado, at their Zarafshan/Newmont Joint Venture operation in Zarafshan, Uzbekistan. A native of Yreka, California, John graduated from Yreka Union High School and attended the College of the Siskiyous. He has a strong foundation in mathematics, general science and physical geology. John was awarded the Whestine Memorial Scholarship which is given annually to a student who excelled in mathematics and engineering at the College of Siskiyous. In his spare time John has been involved in competative mountain bike racing and at one time was among the top fifteen junior experts in the nation.
  • M.S. Thesis Award for graduate Leo Gilbride
    Leo Gilbride (M.S. Mining Engineering '95) has received the 1996 M.S. Thesis Award for significant, original contribution from the U.S. National Committee for Rock Mechanics of the National ResearchCouncil, for his thesis Blast-Induced Rock Movement Modeling for Bench Blasting in Nevada Open-Pit Mines. The award is given annually to the winner of a competition that usually involves submissions from the leading rock mechanics programs around the country, including civil, petroleum, mining, and geological engineering, as well as structural geology and geophysics.
