Education
Education and training of students and residents
is a core value of this department. Recognizing that we are working
with adult learners, our goal is to provide a safe environment in which
learners can expand their knowledge and skills. Acknowledging the breadth
of family medicine, our motto is to encourage learners to “Diagnosis
and manage the common problems uncommonly well”, while also allowing
them to explore individual areas of interest.
Scholarly Activity
We believe that the development and dissemination of new knowledge is vital
to the growth of family medicine, both in the field of patient care and in
education. Therefore we encourage and support faculty, residents and students
who pursue their areas of interest and seek to publish their work
The Program
The Family Medicine Residency Program in Reno is a part of the Department of Family and
Community Medicine. The program is fully accredited by the ACGME and all of our graduates
have passed the certification examination by the American Board of Family Medicine.
Graduates are currently practicing in a variety of settings, from rural to urban.
In addition to training residents, the department is the primary training site for
third-year medical students. The residents work closely with the students on the family
medicine service and
contribute greatly to the students' educational experience.
The heart of the Family Medicine Residency is the Family Medicine Center. It provides a
group practice setting in which you will provide primary care to a diverse group of
patients. The Family Medicine Center is located on the main campus of the School of
Medicine. It was constructed in 1986 and was designed specifically as a center for the
training of Family Medicine residents and medical students. The building is approximately
12,000 square feet and contains a large conference room, a fully equipped minor surgery
room, a residents' work area and library, business and faculty offices, laboratory, x-ray
and ultrasound. The campus pharmacy is located within the Student Health Center adjacent
to the Family Medicine Center.
The ability to manage patients in the hospital setting is an important part of the
first-year curriculum. With this in mind, the first year of the residency program is
oriented primarily toward inpatient care and provides comprehensive in-hospital training.
As a first-year resident, you will be able to follow your panel of patients in the Family
Medicine Center by spending one-half day per week in the Family Medicine Center. In
addition to the weekly time in the Center, you will be given the opportunity to spend two
to four weeks full-time in the Family Medicine Center during the beginning of the first
year. This time period allows you to become acquainted with the patient panel, the
comprehensive team approach to patient care, the operation of the Family Medicine Center
and your new surroundings in general.
The second- and third-year curriculum places additional emphasis on increasing your
skills in ambulatory care. You will spend from two to five half-day periods in the Family
Medicine Center each week. As you complete the required rotations, you can choose
electives that will allow you to explore areas of special interest or need.
