Placement Testing

On February 18th, 2008, the University will begin using ACCUPLACER for placement testing. Accuplacer is a commerical product made by CollegeBoard.

Beginning with summer 2008 enrollment, initial* placement in Core and pre-Core MATH and STAT courses will be based on ACT and SAT scores, or performance on the Accuplacer placement test offered at the Math Center.

*Once a student has started the math/stat sequence, only successful completion of the course will permit student enrollment into the next course in the math/stat series.

NOTE 1:  If your score is below 17 on the ACT, below 470 on the SAT or below 53 on the Accuplacer Elementary Algebra Test, then  you should take a remedial course lower than Math 096.   Truckee Meadow Community College offers mathematics courses below Math 096.  They can advise which course would be appropriate for you.

NOTE 2:  MATH 096 covers topics from Algebra 1 (referred to as Algebra 1-2 in the Washoe County School District) available at the middle school and high school levels.  Students do not receive college credit for MATH 096 toward their degree, nor does it satisfy the core mathematics requirement.  However, the three credits do count towards scholarship eligibility and enrollment.

NOTE 3:  MATH 120 satisfies the Core mathematics requirement.  It is a terminal mathematics course meant to be taken by non-quantitative majors.  It will not prepare a student for any other mathematics or statistics course on the UNR campus.   All courses which list MATH 120 as a prerequisite accept a higher level Mathematics or Statistics course in its place.  If you have questions please check with your advisor.

NOTE 4:  MATH 126 covers topics from Algebra 2 (called Algebra 3-4 in WCSD) available at high school level.   It does not satisfy the Core mathematics requirement; however, it counts towards three college credits as an elective.  To complete the core requirement, students must follow this course with MATH 127, 176, or STAT 152.  Please note that MATH 126 is equivalent to UNR's previous course MATH 124.
