Postdoctoral Appointment

The Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications for postdoctoral positions to start in Fall 2013, subject to availability of funds. While candidates from all areas of mathematics and statistics are welcome to apply, at least one appointment will be in the area of statistics. Preference will be given to other areas which are already represented in the department. Candidates will be expected to contribute to the research and teaching mission of the University. These are 12 month contracts annually renewable for a maximum of three years. Appointments typically carry a 2-2 teaching load. Individuals are also expected to come to the department with a research plan, ideally one that meets with existing strengths within the department, and to pursue publications linked to this research plan. Salary is competitive for postdoctoral positions at similarly Carnegie-ranked institutions, as well as other Tier I universities ranked on the U.S. News list of colleges and universities. These positions are open to candidates who have completed a doctoral degree. All positions require a PhD in mathematics, statistics or equivalent by August 15, 2013.

Screening of applicants will begin 05/15/2013 and continue until positions are filled. EEO/AA Women and under-represented groups are encouraged to apply.

Applicants should submit a cover letter outlining their areas of research interest and teaching experience, curriculum vitae and three letters of reference. At least one of these letters should specifically address teaching.

Chair/Professor

The University of Nevada, Reno invites application for position of Chair, Department of Mathematics and Statistics. We seek a dynamic individual with demonstrated leadership abilities who will build on departmental strengths, recruit outstanding faculty, promote scholarly initiatives – especially in terms of externally supported grant efforts – and be an advocate to both internal University and external constituencies. The Chair must be familiar with and supportive of “core math instruction” across a typical University campus. The ideal candidate will be active in the mathematical sciences profession, knowledgeable about diverse career paths, and able to prepare highly-qualified students for graduate and professional schools. Applicants must have a PhD and scholarly record meriting appointment as a full professor. The area of specialization within the discipline is open.

The department currently has 29 full-time positions, with 20 either tenured or tenure track. Academic programs leading to the award of the B.S./B.A and M.S./M.A. in Mathematics and Statistics are well subscribed with over 100 majors and approximately 40 graduate students. After several years where the University faced cuts to programs, the department and University are poised for growth. A PhD program proposal has been developed and the new Chair would guide that proposal to completion. We expect future faculty and post-doctoral hires. All tenured and tenure track faculty maintain active research programs across a range of disciplinary sub-areas with current multi-faculty strengths in C* Algebras, Topology, PDEs and Geo-Statistics. More information about the department and its faculty can be found at http://www.unr.edu/math.

The University of Nevada, Reno is a major teaching and research oriented land-grant University. The campus extends across 290 acres conveniently situated in Reno and just 30 miles from Lake Tahoe. Fishing, sailing, swimming, hiking, biking, kayaking, skiing, golfing, camping and horseback riding are all exceptional and less than half an hour away in the Sierra Nevada Mountains or surrounding desert recreational areas. Inc. Magazine rated Reno as the “#1 Place to Do Business.” The state of Nevada has no income tax, comparatively low property tax and competitive faculty tuition benefits for university employees and their dependents.
