Associate Professor of Mathematics (Applied)
The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Nevada, Reno invites applications in Applied Mathematics for a tenure-track position at a senior level. We are seeking a dynamic individual with outstanding credentials in research and teaching, who will develop interdisciplinary research collaborations, attract external funding, and play an active role in our graduate programs. The contract will begin July 1, 2008 with a physical start date prior to August 18, 2008.
Priority will be given to candidates in the areas of dynamical/control/stochastic systems, partial differential equations, fluid mechanics, scientific computing and mathematical modeling. Outstanding candidates in other areas, including combinatorics, graph theory, game theory, computational statistics, and applied probability, are also encouraged to apply.
We expect to make an appointment at the Associate Professor level. A higher-level appointment may be possible for an exceptionally qualified individual.
The University of Nevada, Reno is a major teaching, research and land-grant university. With research that defines their fields, University of Nevada faculty last year received more than $130 million in external support for sponsored projects. Minimum qualifications for the positions are:
1) PhD in mathematical sciences (including mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, operations research or other related field);
2) Research record suitable for an appointment at an associate professor level;
3) Record of excellence in teaching, which may include extent and variety of classroom teaching experience, student evaluation of instruction (if available), letters of reference, and results of oral interviews, including communication skills;
4) Potential for attracting external funding;
5) Interest in collaborative research.
Preferred qualifications:
Prior experience in graduate student supervision.
Research interests complementary to those of the applied math group.
Success in attracting external funding.
Experience in interdisciplinary collaborative research.

Lecturer Positions
The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Nevada, Reno (http://www.unr.edu/cos/math/) invites applications for two full-time permanent lecturer positions. We are seeking dynamic individuals with a Ph.D. degree in a mathematical science and outstanding credentials in teaching who are interested in a teaching career at a university.
Duties include teaching undergraduate courses, coordination of multi-section courses, participation in program assessment and mentoring of graduate student instructors. For one of the positions, potential to work effectively with the College of Education and enthusiasm for teaching courses for pre-service elementary school teachers is required.
Minimum qualifications for the positions are:
- PhD in a mathematical science (including mathematics, applied mathematics, statistics, computer science, operations research or other related field)
- Record of excellence in teaching lower division courses, evidence of which may include extent and variety of classroom teaching experience, student evaluation of instruction, letters of reference, and results of oral interviews.
- For one of the positions, potential to work effectively with the College of Education and enthusiasm for teaching courses for elementary school teachers.
- Excellent communication skills.
Preferred qualifications for the positions are:
- Experience teaching large lectures of pre-calculus and calculus classes;
- Experience as a multi-section course coordinator;
- For one of the positions, expertise in teaching pedagogy and experience teaching courses designed for pre-service elementary school teachers.

Graduate Teaching Assistantships
The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Nevada, Reno offers a Master of Science degree with an emphasis in Pure Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or Statistics. Teaching Assistantships pay $14,000 per academic year with tuition and fee waiver. In addition, graduate students are eligible for scholarship awards up to $4,000 on a competitive basis. Opportunities for additional earnings my be available for summer research and instruction.

Applicant pool for Letter of Appointment (LoA) Positions
The Department of Mathematics & Statistics at the University of Nevada, Reno often needs part-time temporary Letter of Appointment teaching positions. Minimum qualifications are normally a masters degree in a mathematical science or related field, demonstrated excellence in teaching mathematics, and expertise in the subject matter of the courses to be taught. We are particularly interested in those on leave from other institutions who have strong research records compatible with the interests of continuing faculty in the department. Salaries begin at $815 per semester credit hour, but may be considerably higher depending on experience and qualifications. Applications will be kept in a pool for one year, after which they will expire. Positions may be filled at any time as needed from this pool.
