Work Session #1

Identify Goals, Issues, and Concepts

As the first work session in the master planning process, the session conveyed the planning process, the schedule (with dates for future sessions), and solicited input regarding needs, issues, desires, and goals. Note cards (see conference report PDF) document comments gained over the two days. Review of the comments resulted in a statement of “recurring themes” and a draft of the goals for the comprehensive planning process.

Topical Briefs -Revised

This series of documents identify factors that will influence the development of the Comprehensive Master Plan for the University of Nevada, Reno. Each topical brief presents major conclusions and recommendations drawn from the evaluation of the best available data and the professional observations of the particular consultant with the appropriate cooperation of university staff.

The Topical Briefs serve as the documented appraisal of the status of information and provide direction for the next steps in the master planning process.

The second work session focused on program projections, an analysis of existing conditions (topical briefs- see above), and the discussion of three preliminary organizational concepts for the campus's expansion.

University and College Community Development Partnerships
This body of research identifies the emerging trends in partnerships between urban universities and colleges and their surrounding communities in order to spur community revitalization and economic development.   It also includes four relevant case studies, and highlights the potential application to the development of a mixed-use district proposed south of I-80 by the City of Reno and the University of Nevada, Reno.

Work Session #3
The third work session reviewed the refined alternative concepts for campus expansion, a preliminary analysis of the physical accomodation of the university departments and colleges, capacity studies of the current university-owned property, and several detailed building siting studies.

The fourth work session focused on the prefered concept, incorporating and refining the favorable aspects of alternatives reviewed in work session #3.

This supplemental meeting to work session #4 focused on the preferred alternative presented in work session #4. The meeting was held to include members of the President's Council not able to attend Work Session #4. These members included the President and Athletics' Director.

This work session reviewed the preferred alternative and its supporting documentation. Input from the session identified several areas for further refinement that Sasaki Associates will incorporate into the plan as part of the draft report to be reviewed in October.

Work Session #6

This work session reviewed the draft master plan report that was posted to the web site on 28 September.

The one-day work session involved the following committees:

•  UPC/Master Plan Advisory Committee

•  President's Council and Affiliates

•  City of Reno with representatives for DRI and TMCC
