University of Nevada, Reno

The esteemed Nevada historian James Hulse has a deep connection to the University of Nevada, Reno.

His relationship with the campus began in the early 1950s, when he was an undergraduate student in search of his future. Later, as a professor and writer, Hulse became uniquely qualified to chronicle the University’s development.

He has always had a fond place in his heart for the campus.

“It’s a beautiful campus, and it’s hard not to think about all of the many people who throughout the institution’s history have helped make it such a special place,” said Hulse, a member of the Nevada Writer’s Hall of Fame.

In two volumes of history, including, “The University of Nevada: A Centennial History,” Hulse has written of the University’s spurts of growth, its increasing value its state and its aspirations for the future.

Hulse quite correctly notes in “The University of Nevada: A Centennial History” that, “We should also recall that a university is something more than a school or a college, a campus or a faculty. It should include all of these things, but it becomes a university in the fullest sense only when it offers specialized education and conducts research for the good of mankind and for the satisfaction of intellectual curiosity – with the blessing and support of the community that sustains it.”

Walk anywhere on the University of Nevada, Reno campus, and you can feel Hulse’s words come to life.

The “specialized education,” the “research for the good of mankind,” the contagious sense of wonder that students experience through the “satisfaction of intellectual curiosity,” the “blessing and support of the community,” all come clearly into focus.
