At Mackay, it's understood that education goes beyond just the textbook and classroom. That's why we're not just a school but a state-of-the-art research facility where students have the opportunity to turn knowledge into applied practice.

Mackay Buildings
The Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering is housed in five buildings:
  • Mackay School of Mines
Home of the Mackay Director's office, W.M. Keck Museum and DeLaMare Library.
  • Scrugham Engineering/Mines
Home of the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology
  • Laxalt Mineral Engineering
Home of Mining Engineering, Geological Sciences and Engineering, the Nevada Seismological Lab and the Arentz Student Center
  • Laxalt Mineral Research
Home of Mackay faculty offices, classrooms and labs
  • Mackay Science
Home of Geography and the Nevada State Climate Office
Research Labs
In addition to several classroom laboratories, Mackay has several notable research laboratories.

Arthur Brant Laboratory for Exploration Geophysics (ABLE)
In ABLE, geoscientists learn how to apply the fundamental principles and concepts of geophysical remote sensing, potential fields/electrical methods and geographic information systems.

Collaboratory for Computational Geosciences (CCoG)
A facility for massively parallel computing, the CCoG offers students of geological sciences and engineering the opportunity to gain skills in parallelized coding and execution.

Dendro Laboratory
Dedicated to tree-ring analysis, the Dendro Lab provides the opportunity for students to gain practical knowledge of the relation between tree growth and climate.

Geospatial Laboratory (G-Lab)
In the G-Lab, students can apply GIS technologies and spatial statistics to the research of ecosystems pattern and processes and their affected biotic and abiotic components.

Other Facilities
Mackay also has its very own student center, museum and library.

Arentz Student Center
Dubbed the official "Mackay Student Space," the Arentz Student Center provides Mackay students with 24-hour access to a study center complete with computers, microwave oven, space to spread out and space to get comfortable. And, the Arentz Student Center is home to Mackay's Coordinators of Student Services, Elizabeth Ball and Leslie Rumph

W.M. Keck Museum
Voted "The best tourist attraction tourists seldom see" in 2004 by the Reno News & Review , the W.M. Keck Earth Science and Mineral Engineering Museum features an impressive collection of minerals, ores, fossil specimens and photographs in addition to mining related relics. The museum is also home to many pieces of the stunning Mackay Silver Collection, completed in 1878 by Tiffany & Co. for John Mackay.

DeLaMare Library
The official library of Mackay School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, the DeLaMare Library specializes in materials relating to earth sciences, chemical, civil, computer, electrical, geological, mechanical, metallurgical and mining engineering, and computer science. Additionally, the library houses the Mary B. Ansari Map Library, which includes over 137,000 maps!
