Dan Barthel is in his 13th year as a music educator and band director at Depoali Middle School in Reno and has been on the LTMC staff since 2002. As an active participant in the education community throughout the region, he is a past president of the Nevada Music Educators Association and is chair of the 2017 Honor Band. He earned his bachelor's and master of music in music education from the University of Nevada, Reno.

Amy Barthel has been on the LTMC staff since 2002 as a music educator. She is the Washoe County School District (WCSD) General Music Curriculum Specialist and teaches General Music at Donner Springs Elementary School. She is a past president of the local Orff Chapter and is currently a school district mentor for new general music teachers in the WCSD. She holds a bachelor's in music education from the University of Nevada, Reno.

Reed Chamberlin, D.M.A.Symphonic Band Director

R. Reed Chamberlin serves as Director of Academic Bands at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he conducts the UNR Wind Ensemble, teaches conducting, and guides the concert band program. He holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in Conducting from the Eastman School of Music where he was the Assistant Conductor of the Eastman Wind Ensemble, a Fennell Conducting Fellow, and recipient of the Walter Hagen Prize in Conducting. Prior to his appointment at UNR, he served on the faculty of Seton Hill University in Pennsylvania, and was a successful high school music teacher in Ohio. He holds a BME degree from The Ohio State University, and an MM degree in Conducting from Youngstown State University.

His work and experiences represent the nexus of music education and professional level performance, exemplified through the wind-band performance medium. He is in regular demand as a guest conductor and clinician.

His work has been recognized internationally through publication and auditioned conducting symposiums. Notable was the 2008 International Conducting Symposium, sponsored by the National Band Association, and held in conjunction with The Italian Army Band. He has published articles in the National Band Association Journal, the Ohio Music Education Association’s TRIAD, and the WASBE Journal. He was also integral in production of the Eastman Wind Ensemble’s recent CD, Stravinsky — Octet and L’Histoire du Soldat.

Nichole Heglund currently teaches choir at Billinghurst Middele School in Reno, Nev. She began teaching in the Washoe County School District in 2003. Most recently Mrs. Heglund was the band director at Swope Middle School where her bands consistently received superior scores at festivals in Nevada and California. Her ensembles were invited to perform at the 2011 Nevada Music Educators Association Conference and were honored with a spotlight performance for the Northern Nevada Band Festival. Mrs. Heglund is a private saxophone instructor at the University of Nevada, Reno and in Northern Nevada. She is a member of the Reno Wind Symphony and is also an active clinician and adjudicator in Northern Nevada. Mrs. Heglund was the assistant director of the Lake Tahoe Music Camp from 2009-2014 and is currently President-Elect of the Nevada Music Educators Association. She received a bachelor of music education degree from the University of Northern Colorado and a master’s degree in educational leadership from the University of Nevada, Reno.

Patrick Bowen has been the percussion instructor at the Las Vegas Academy since 1994, where the percussion ensemble or soloists have won the Nevada All State Command Performance numerous times. Bowen is in his 12th year at the Academy where he teaches the world jazz studies area and chamber ensembles. He was the percussionist for the hit Broadway show “Mamma Mia” at the Mandalay Bay Resort and is presently the principal percussionist with the Las Vegas Philharmonic. He has a bachelor’s in music performance from the Hartt School of Music (cum laude), a master’s in music performance from the University of Montana, and a teaching certificate from UNLV.

Jazz Ensemble Director

Colonel Vernon Scarbrough is the co-founder of the Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra II and has spent most of his life in the Reno-Sparks area, attending local schools. It was in the Washoe County School District that he learned his craft as a musician, with an emphasis on the saxophone. Vern graduated with a Bachelor of Music, with a minor in Music Education from one the country’s most prestigious jazz colleges, the University of North Texas. He received his Master’s Degree in Fine Arts, Music Education from Southern Oregon University. Vern earned an additional Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies from the United States Army War College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. Mr. Scarbrough taught band in the Washoe County School District for eighteen years, the last seven of which were for Pine Middle School. While the Band Director at Pine, the Pine Patriot Jazz Ensemble traveled to Hawaii, San Diego, New York, and Disney’s Music in the Park for jazz competitions. At each venue, the Patriot Jazz Ensemble won first place and gold awards. In addition to being the Director of the Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra II, Vernon teaches saxophone and jazz band at the Lake Tahoe Music Camp each year. Colonel Scarbrough has been an officer in the Nevada Army National Guard for over thirty years and has deployed two times to the Middle East. Vernon and his wife, Karen, are Co Founders of the Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Dr. Andrew Heglund is an associate professor at the University of Nevada, Reno, where he teaches percussion, directs the University Percussion Ensemble and coaches jazz small groups. He earned a doctor of arts degree in music from the University of Northern Colorado and a master of music degree in jazz studies from the University of North Texas. Dr. Heglund performs with faculty jazz quintet The Collective, the Ed Corey Trio, Reno Jazz Orchestra and the Discover Music Percussion Ensemble. Also a composer, he has had several solo percussion works choreographed and performed with the Sierra Nevada Ballet. Dr. Heglund also coordinates the annual Northern Nevada Day of Percussion, the Reno Jazz Orchestra Jazz in the Schools Clinic, and the Jazz Mentor Program.
